A Step-by-Step Approach to Effectively Utilizing On-Campus Recruiting

The On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) Program is an opportunity for UNM students and alumni to interview for career opportunities with a wide variety of potential employers. Employers advertise vacancies available in their organizations. Students request to be considered for those positions, and finally, employers determine who they will interview on campus. Please note, while the actual interviews take place in our office, these interviews are with employers from all over the country who seek to hire UNM graduates.

Step 1 - Register with Career Services

Formally register with us by stopping by our office located in the Student Services Center, Room 220 Monday through Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm (year round). Registration is free to all current UNM students. Please call us at 277-2531 with questions or concerns.

Step 2 - Check the On-Campus Recruiting Schedule

Routinely check the OCR Schedule to keep up-to-date on newly added employer interviews and/or information sessions. While the original schedule is posted at the beginning of each Fall and Spring Semester (no OCR Program during summer) many employers are added to the schedule throughout the semester. An updated schedule is available 24/7 throughout the recruiting season on our website. Remember, you must be registered with our office to participate in OCR.

Step 3 - View the Recruiting Bulletin

View the Recruiting Bulletin information found in eRecruiting (under the "Jobs & Internships" tab select Jobs with interview schedules in the 1-Click Searches box) for each of the organizations you are interested in interviewing with. Make sure you have the appropriate degree level and major requested by the employer and that you understand the job description. Pay special attention to information about geographic location, travel and citizenship requirements. Don't forget to research the company homepage and other sources of information to help you learn more about the organization and make an informed decision about whether or not you are interested in interviewing.

Step 4 - Submit your Resume

Open Schedules: Sign-up for interviews on a first come first serve basis with any employer offering an open schedule. Closed Schedules: Submit your resume, during the apply dates (found at the bottom of each job posting with interview schedules in eRecruiting) on-line utilizing eRecruiting to each organization with which you are interested in interviewing. Your resume will be electronically forwarded to the employers of your choice at the end of the apply period. The employer will screen and select the applicants they wish to interview from those resumes submitted on-line.

Step 5 - Find Out If You Have Been Selected

To find out if you have been selected to interview logon to eRecruiting and check your application status under the "Application" tab. If you have been selected for an interview you will be allowed to schedule an interview time. Please make note of the day and time for your interview for future reference. In addition, you will receive an email from our office informing you of your interview selection and instructing you on how to sign-up for your interview.

Step 6 - Prepare for your OCR Interview

Prepare for your interview by researching the employer's homepage. Learn as much as you can about the organization and the position. Work on developing and refining your interviewing skills. Mock interviews can be scheduled with one of our Career Development Facilitators (CDFs) for advanced interview practice and preparation. Finally, come to our office on the day of your interview arriving 10-15 minutes early. Sign-in at the reception desk and have a seat in the waiting area. The recruiter will come to the waiting area and call your name when he or she is ready for your interview.

Step 7 - Follow-up!

Follow-up with each recruiter you interview with by writing a letter expressing your appreciation for the interview and your interest in working with their organization. Contact information for each employer can be found in eRecruiting.

RETAINING YOUR ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING PRIVILEGES

Be mindful of the ethical implications of your job search. Submit resumes to an employer only if you are genuinely interested in working for that organization. Once you schedule an interview, you are expected to arrive for the interview on time. Canceling interviews at the last minute, forgetting about your interview, or not showing up reflects negatively on you, our office and the University. In many cases, you also prevent other students from interviewing with that organization. For these reasons, if you must cancel an interview, contact us 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. If you choose to not show up for an interview, you will be suspended from interviewing on campus until you write a letter of apology to the employer and supply us with a copy. This policy will be strictly enforced!
